The lamp-lit rear extension of a stone terrace at night, a roof lantern over glazed doors and a wet patio

Supreme Skylights puts glass into roofs. We install new skylights and rooflights, and we replace ones that have misted, aged or stopped suiting the room. The work is for houses in Newport and in the towns and villages within 30 road miles of the city, which takes in Monmouthshire, Torfaen, Caerphilly and Cardiff on the Welsh side and Bristol, South Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean across the water.

Every job starts with a free survey and ends with a 10-year workmanship guarantee in writing. Between those two points sit a fixed written quote and, where the work is notifiable, the Building Regulations notification, which we handle for you.

The products we install and replace

The range covers pitched roofs, flat roofs and the rooms underneath them. For a sloping roof over a loft, a landing or a bathroom there are roof windows, including VELUX windows. A flat roof over a kitchen or a back addition is the place for a roof lantern, or for a rooflight built for flat roofs. Where the glass sits out of reach, electric opening rooflights open and close without a pole or a stepladder.

Some homes need something more particular. Walk-on rooflights suit a roof terrace or a floor that light has to pass through. Conservation rooflights are chosen for older roofs and for houses that are listed or stand in a protected area. Energy-efficient rooflights are chosen around their glazing, and sun tunnels bring daylight down through the loft to a hall or a windowless room. When a sealed unit has fogged between its panes, our misted rooflight service replaces it.

Roof window
Set in the same plane as the roof slope around it, in the wording of Approved Document L (Wales).
Rooflight
A glazed unit standing out of plane with the roof on a kerb or upstand. The same document notes it is sometimes called a skylight.
Roof lantern
A raised glazed structure that stands over an opening in a flat roof.
Sun tunnel
A tube that carries daylight from a dome on the roof to a diffuser in the ceiling below.

Newport, and 30 road miles out

The city is the centre of the map, and the edge is drawn by road distance from it. On the Welsh side that takes in places such as Pontypool, Abertillery, Caldicot, Chepstow, Caerphilly and Cardiff. Over the Severn bridges it reaches Bristol and the South Gloucestershire towns, along with the Forest of Dean.

Wales and England plan and regulate rooflights under separate rules. Two houses of the same age and build, one on each side of the bridges, can sit under different permitted development conditions and different Approved Documents. We work to the rules of the country the house stands in, and the planning guide sets the two countries out in their own sections. The full list of places is on the areas page.

How a job runs

From your first message to the finished room, the shape of a job stays the same whichever product it is for.

  1. A free survey We look at the room and the roof above it. No price is given before this visit.
  2. A fixed written quote After the survey you receive a fixed written quote for the product that suits the room.
  3. Planning, where it applies Some rooflights fall within permitted development and some need a planning application or listed building consent. We confirm which applies with the council.
  4. Building Regulations Where the work is notifiable, we handle the Building Regulations notification with local authority building control or a registered building control approver.
  5. The guarantee Once the work is complete, the 10-year workmanship guarantee comes to you in writing.

Why we think about the evening

Daylight is the reason people ask for a rooflight, yet a family spends much of its waking time under one in the early morning and the evening. Those hours are worth thinking about before the glass goes in. Will someone sleep beneath the glass in midsummer, when it gets light very early? Is the bathroom used for a late shower that leaves moisture to settle on the coldest surface in the room? Does the kitchen get its busiest hour after sunset in winter?

Once the lamps are on, glass overhead turns black and shows the room back to itself, a little like an uncurtained window seen from inside. Where the opening sits and how its reveal is finished can decide whether that reads as a calm dark panel in the ceiling. A loft bedroom can be planned with a blackout blind from the start, and the glazing and ventilation for a bathroom roof window can take account of moisture settling on cold glass overnight. That way of judging a product is what we call good after dark.

Talking to us

The quickest way to start is the survey request form. You can also send a message or photos on WhatsApp to 07880 284133, or email info@supremeskylightsnewport.co.uk. Tell us which room it is, roughly where you live and what the roof above it is like, and we will arrange a time to call round.

About Supreme Skylights: your questions

Which areas do you cover?

Newport and the towns and villages within 30 road miles of it, in South Wales and across the Severn in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean. The areas page lists each place.

Is there a charge for the survey?

No. We survey free of charge, and no figure is given until the product, the roof and the room have all been seen. The fixed written quote comes after that visit.

Can you replace a rooflight someone else fitted?

Yes. We replace existing skylights, rooflights, roof windows and lanterns, including units that have misted between the panes. The replacement is surveyed and quoted in the same way as a new opening.

Who deals with building control?

We do, where the work is notifiable. In Wales a new rooflight will generally need Building Regulations approval, and we handle the notification through local authority building control or a registered building control approver. Our Building Regulations guide explains the Welsh rules.

What does the guarantee cover?

Our workmanship, for 10 years, set out in writing. The guarantee page explains how it works alongside the maker's own warranty on the product.
