A village of 2,444 and the roofs over its rooms
Hendreforgan is a village in the community of Gilfach Goch, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the 2021 census recorded 2,444 people there. The Nant Ogwr Fach, a small tributary stream to the Afon Ogwr, passes through the nearby area.
Hendreforgan is a village of 2,444 people, and the table speaks about house types in general. Terraces from the late 1800s and early 1900s are often slated over solid walls. Semis built after the war can carry concrete tile instead. The only roof that settles anything is your own: the covering, the pitch of the slope and the timbers above the room in question.
| Type of home | Above the ceiling | Worth a price |
|---|---|---|
| Older terrace with a loft room | A pitched slope in slate or tile | Roof window, with a blackout blind for sleeping |
| Semi or bungalow with a dim hallway | A pitched roof and a loft void | Sun tunnel run through the loft |
| Back kitchen built onto a house | A flat roof on joists | Flat rooflight, or a lantern if the ceiling height allows |
| Bathroom tucked under the slope | Pitched roof, low eaves | Roof window that opens to clear steam |

Rhondda Cynon Taf and what Wales allows
Planning for Hendreforgan sits with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. Welsh householder rights can cover a rooflight in a house roof, subject to limits on projection and height that our planning guide for Wales sets out.
Flats sit outside those householder rights altogether. A house can also lose them through an Article 4 direction, or through a condition on its original planning consent. A listed house is a separate matter: work that would affect its character needs listed building consent, applied for through the local planning authority. Where a case is in doubt, ask the council before ordering anything.

A loft bedroom in June
Roof windows, blackout blinds and a sun that rises early.
In June the sky is bright long before most alarms go off, and a bedroom in the roof takes every bit of it. A roof window can sit in the slope above the bed, with no wall, curtain rail or neighbouring gable between you and the morning. That puts the blind at the top of the list, ahead of frame colour and finish. For a sleeping room, a blackout blind is where to start, chosen alongside the window.
Warmth is the next question. A room under a slope can hold the day's heat into the night, so a window that opens earns its keep. A sash that tilts or swings wide lets the room air through the small hours. The page on roof windows sets out what is on offer, and the comparison of a centre pivot and a top-hung window helps you decide how the sash should move.
Cutting a new opening changes the roof. Making the hole usually means altering the roof's frame, and the slope must be able to carry the weight of what is fitted into it, or be strengthened. Because of that, a new rooflight will generally need Building Regulations approval, and where the work is notifiable we handle the notification with local authority building control or a registered building control approver.
Sill height gets less attention than it should. Set too high, the handle is a stretch; set too low, the sash meets the headboard or a wardrobe. It helps to stand in the room, note the bed and the furniture, and work out where the opening part will fall.
If the loft is being turned into a bedroom, say so at the start. Approved Document B (Wales) sets out what an escape window must be, and which route suits the house is a conversation to have early.
Weather on the roof is the other thing a loft bedroom hears. VELUX lists rain noise reduction among its glazing options, and which options exist varies from one window to the next, so it is a question for the day the window is priced. A bedroom is the room where that noise is noticed, so it is worth raising before the order is placed.
After dark the pane goes black and holds the lit room. With the blind down, it is a dark ceiling over a sleeping bed.

The back kitchen when the garden has gone dark
Flat rooflights and lanterns on a single-storey addition.
Think about where the daylight used to arrive. Before a kitchen is added to the back of a house, the rear wall holds a window and a door. Afterwards the room runs out towards the garden, the old window looks into the middle of the house, and the worktop furthest from the glazed doors stays dim for most of the day. Light from above reaches that corner when nothing else will.
A flat rooflight is a pane of glass on a raised upstand over a flat roof. A roof lantern is its taller cousin, with pitched glass and a ceiling that climbs into it. Both start from the same questions: the roof structure, the depth of the build-up, and how the opening will be lined inside. The lantern or flat rooflight comparison sets the two side by side for the room you have in mind.
Suppertime is when the choice shows. With the garden dark, the glass overhead goes black and repeats the pendant light, the hob and whoever is stirring. A tidy lining reads as a calm panel; a rough one reads as an untidy hole. The lining and the shape of the reveal are worth talking through at the survey.
Cooking sends steam upwards, and glass overhead can be the first place it settles overnight. Venting the hood outdoors is one answer, and glass that opens is another. Our page on electric opening rooflights covers the ones worked from a switch.
Think about the evening as well as the afternoon. A kitchen used for supper, homework and washing up is lit for hours after the sky has gone, and the rooflight is on view the whole time. Choosing the glass is partly choosing what that panel will look like at nine o'clock, with the lights on and the garden invisible behind it.
Depth matters inside as well as out. A shallow flat roof leaves little room for a deep reveal, while a thicker build-up gives the lining more to work with, and it shows in how the opening reads from the table below it.
Lanterns have their own planning story. Put on an existing flat roof, a lantern normally needs planning permission; the reasoning sits in the Welsh planning guide. On a new extension, we confirm with Rhondda Cynon Taf how a lantern is treated before any work begins.
| What you weigh | Where it lands |
|---|---|
| Outline from the garden | A flat rooflight sits low; a lantern stands taller |
| Ceiling inside | A lantern lets the ceiling rise under it |
| Steam at supper | An opening rooflight lets the room air |
| Planning on an existing roof | A lantern is confirmed with the council |
Where does the steam go under the bathroom slope?
Roof windows for rooms that run damp.
Does the glass above the bath clear by itself, or does it drip onto the sill? Under a slope the pane is exposed to the cold side of the roof, so the vapour from a hot bath finds it quickly. So the shortlist is practical: glass that opens, an extractor left running after the shower, and a blind made for damp air.
Swapping a window brings a ventilation question with it. Approved Document F (Wales) says a replacement for a window that carried trickle vents should have vents of no smaller size, so say at the survey if the old frame had a slot along its top edge.
Privacy needs a look. By day a window in the slope is seldom overlooked, yet after dark a lit bathroom can be seen from any higher window facing it. A blind answers that, and standing at the spot where the window will go is the quickest way to see what looks back.
Reach matters here. A window above the bath, or set back behind the basin, is a stretch to open by hand, and a model worked from a switch or remote takes the strain out of it. One thing to know: the rain sensor is VELUX's own feature, fitted to its solar and electric windows only, which is why the model is named when one is suggested.
Blinds are worth a word. A bathroom roof window is lit from inside at night, so a blind is as much about privacy as about the morning sun. It is better chosen with the window than guessed at afterwards, because the maker's own range for each window is the place to start.
Swapping an old window within the same opening is a lighter job than cutting a fresh one. The answer on replacing an old skylight shows how they differ.
Practical questions from Hendreforgan homes
Do you cover a village the size of Hendreforgan?
Yes. Hendreforgan is 27.7 road miles west of Newport, and the survey costs nothing. A fixed written quote comes after the survey.
Which council decides on a new roof window here?
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is the local planning authority. Whether a given house needs an application depends on the house and its history. The Welsh planning guide takes you through the checks in order, and the council can confirm a case you are unsure about.
My loft is crammed with boxes. Could a sun tunnel still go in?
It depends on the route, and the loft decides it. The tube needs a clear way between roof and ceiling, so the survey looks at tanks, cables, timbers and storage. If a bend is needed, the guide to rigid and flexible tubes compares the options.
Who gives permission if the house is listed?
The local planning authority handles listed building consent, which is needed where the work would affect the building's character. Cadw recommends which buildings are listed, and the Welsh Ministers compile the list.
What does a blackout blind change in a loft bedroom?
It darkens the room against the early sun. A roof window gives daylight a direct way into the room, and the blind is the part that shuts it off when you want to sleep. In a loft bedroom in June, the choice of blind matters as much as the choice of window.
Can I message first and fill in a form later?
Yes. Send a WhatsApp to 07880 284133, or email info@supremeskylightsnewport.co.uk, with the street and the room in question. The survey form is there when you want it.
